NEW for 2012, the Gregory Fury 40 L Technical Backpack is light, durable, fully-loaded with features, and one of the nicest mid-size packs we've seen. The Fury 40 L is the largest mid-size pack of the Gregory Fury series. Gregory has also produced a women's specific version of the Fury - called the Freia.
The Fury 40 weighs in at 2 lbs 2 oz (960 g) for the small version on up to 2 lbs 6 oz (1.1 kg) for the large. The Fury's back system is a simple plate with a single horizontal stay up top, straps are vented and not over-padded given that loads should be reasonably light and there are loads and loads of pockets – side stash pockets, a big stow pocket on the front, hip-belt pockets and neat little stretch pockets on the shoulder strap.
The Gregory Fury has two obvious unusual touches. One is that the base of the pack flares outwards at the hip, which may make for some interesting packing, it's fine with, say, stuffed clothing, more solid cargo may not sit so well. The other interesting tough is that the lid opens the other way to normal and hinges away rather than towards the back system. The idea is that it's neater and also gives better stability when the lid is flipped off, but we're not sure it makes much odds either way. Either way - this is a good-looking feature! Otherwise you get a reinforced base, lots of zig-zag compression straps and thin webbing to save weight. The hip tensioner straps run under the belt-pockets for neatness and ease of adjustment.
The Gregory Fury 40 is a comfy, torso-hugging pack with a nice wrap around the hips thanks to that contoured design. There's lots of external storage, which is great on the move and smart, understated looks.
