Are you ready for your next Ragnar Trail Relay? Part 2

    by Gerry

Last week we started covering Ragnar Trail Relays.

We went over what Ragnar Trail Relays are and our recommended trail running shoes. But what about in between running the loops. You are going to want a quality tent for either just you,  your partner, or for all your teammates to share.

If it's a tent just for you or you and a partner, CC Outdoor Store recommends

The Big Agnes Copper Spur UL2

The Big Agnes Copper Spur UL2, a three season, free standing,  tent perfect for any expedition. When you are facing the elements far away from civilization, you cannot afford to compromise quality. Fly and floor are lightweight silicone treated nylon rip-stop with a 1200 mm waterproof polyurethane coating.  In non-tech talk, you get what may be the most live-able, ultra lightweight (UL) tent in its class.

If you need more room, or want a tent for 3 or four people, The Big Agnes Copper Spur is also available in Big Agnes Copper Spur UL3 Tent and Big Agnes Copper Spur UL4.

Since you will be coming back to camp at all hours from running your loops, here's the ultimate "go to tent".

Big Agnes Copper Spur UL2 mtnGLO™ Tent

Big Agnes Copper Spur UL2 mtnGLO™ Tent. This tent is equipped with new in tent LED technology   - mtnGLO™by Big Agnes Tent -Light Technology with LED lights integrated into the tent body.

Big Agnes also makes large super sturdy Flying Diamond Tents for all your teammates, friends, and family.

    Big Agnes flying diamond 8P

The Big Agnes Flying Diamond 8 Person Tent offers the perfect base camp for all of your 8 Ragnar relay trail runner teammates. This tent can be separated into one large room and one smaller room with stow-able zippered partition wall. Or one half of the partition wall may be attached to the floor using a toggle and loop to allow one side to be unzipped and stowed for easy access and increased storage space. Plus like other Big Agnes tents it has reflective guy-lines for nighttime visibility.

The Big Agnes Flying Diamond 6 Person Tent is designed to hold up in harsh conditions, Big Agnes' best-selling Flying Diamond tents offer lots of room for maximum livability.  This tent is a family favorite, especially when you don't want to risk turning the family off with another night in your big ole leaky tent.  One large vestibule off main room and one access door off smaller, back room. Both access doors have vertical zippers with storm flaps which may be staked out as a shade using trekking poles. Plus the reflective guy-line for nighttime visibility.

NEMO Equipment is a favorite among backpackers and car campers with their innovative tent technology.

NEMO Losi LS™ 3P Backpacking Tent

The NEMO Losi LS™ 3P  Tent is quite likely NEMO's bestselling tent of all time.  Now updated to be even better, Nemo's unique pole configuration gives the Losi LS 3P tent more strength than any other freestanding backpacking tent on the market . Three person, three season, lot's of space - you would be very happy with the Losi LS 3P Tent .  2 large vestibules and doors eliminate jostling for position and provide ample gear storage; both vestibules can be used in multiple configurations

    NEMO Wagontop™ 4P Camping Tent

The NEMO Wagontop™ 4P Camping Tent is NEMO's answer to customer requests for a large, well-made camping tent. You can even stand up in this tent with 6 1/2 feet of head room! The Wagontop  Tent is easy to setup. And it's easy to take down . While it is really a palace for two people, this was the tent we took to the Vermont 50 last fall.  A truly high quality camping tent. Nemo has included a duffel bag carry case so that you can store and travel your Wagontop Tent with ease.

    And for Gear Junkies:

    Big Agnes mtnGLO PowerCase/Loft with Joey® T55

Big Agnes mtnGLO PowerCase/Loft with Joey® T55 The Powercase/Loft is a protective multi-use case with an integrated power supply designed to charge and protect your phone, tablet and other electronic devices. Enjoy the simple convenience of this technology when you're in the backcountry or simply off the grid for a few days.

    Big Agnes Entertainment Loft

Big Agnes Entertainment Loft.  Clips into tent gear loft (sold separately) loops for use of tablets or other devices inside your tent. Compatible with Big Agnes tents and any others with gear loft loops. Adjustable case fits most tablet-sized devices.

    NEMO Tent Accessories

NEMO Equipment Tent Accessories. Design your own tent space the way that you want to organize it. From Nemo gear lofts, gear caddies, vestibules, to a foot pump. Enhance your camping experience so you spend less time trying to find your gear.

Bye for now. The next part in this series will be all about Sleeping Pads and Bags. Ya gotta get your rest in between your Ragnar runs!

Are you ready for your next Ragnar Trail Relay? Part I

    by Gerry

Making sure you're ready for your next  Ragnar Trail Relay

What is a Ragnar Trail Relay?

A Ragnar Trail Relay is the most awesome trail running event around! Teams of usually eight members run relay style on three different loop tracks of trails. Teams run day and night until each of the team members have completed all three single loops. Each loop is progressively tougher.  By the end of the relay each team member has run about a half marathon.

So what gear do you need?

You need quality, stable, fast trail running shoes.  CC Outdoor Store's favorites are:

Salomon XA Pro 3D CS WP Ragnar Trail Relay Running Shoes

Salomon XA Pro 3D CS WP Trail Running Shoes

The XA Pros are lightweight yet tough trail running shoes. This shoe will hold up on wet and muddy trails and dry quickly when you need it to.   (WP stands for waterproof, breathable lining; but they are also available without the WP lining.)  Our manager Josh ran the Vermont 50 last fall in these loved them; they are a favorite of many Applachian Trail thru-hikers traveling fast and light.

Ragnar Trail Relay Lowa Innox GTX Trail Running Shoe

Lowa Innox GTX Lo Trail Running Shoes

The Innox is comfortable, light, and quick, with a super stable trail platform. The Innox also features a waterproof breathable Gore-Tex lining which is not commonly found in running shoes, but can be perfect for races where you'll be in wet and/or muddy conditions.  Gore-Tex can be preferable when you are more worried about your toes getting numb from the cold as opposed to overheating from hot and humid temperatures.

Lowa Ferrox GTX Trail Running Shoes for Ragnar Trail Relay

Lowa Ferrox GTX Lo Trail Running Shoes

The Ferrox is unlike the typical trail shoe's EVA midsole, Lowa's PU MONOWRAP® construction provides better stability and longevity you just can't get in your typical running shoe . This ultra lightweight trail shoe will keep you moving fast and securely.  It runs a little heavier than a regular running shoe, so you might go this route if taking care of your feet is more important to you than the fastest time.  It can also be a great training shoe.

Treksta Edict Trail Running Shoes - Ragnar Trail Relay

TrekSta Edict GTX Trail Running Shoes

With the Edict you'll run more than you ever thought possible. A lightweight trail runner that combines the natural fit of a barefoot shoe with the protection and support the trail demands.  This is a super comfortable and light option, but if the pads of your feet aren't trail tough you might not like how responsive these are to the terrain.

We'll review tents, sleeping bags and cookware in our next articles. So follow our blog and keep watching for our next post!

Lowa Trekking Boots, Vantage & Camino

    by Dylan

Lowa trekking boots are on sale at Trekking is the new backpacking.

What that means: In 2016, the weight and bulk of camping gear is at an all time low -- leading to much lighter loads for backpackers. Since long-distance loads are now regularly under 40lbs, the footwear has changed accordingly. Lowa trekking boots are what you want if you're attuned to modern ultralight times. Still rocking a 75-pound load featuring your Therm-a-rest from 1992 and a nine pound 40-degree sleeping bag? You might want to consider sticking with Lowa's burliest.

This post is about Lowa trekking boots.  Lowa's  top line boots are the Camino — leather lined (LL) and Goretex (GTX) — and the Vantage (GTX).

Lowa trekking boot camino gtx LL Lowa Camino GTX Flex Hiking Boots

The Lowa Camino is a boot I have worn extensively. Carefully constructed with strategically positioned nubuck leather and rubber, the Camino gives incredible support while maintaining a comfortable and lightweight feel. Available in GTX (Gore-Tex aka waterproof membrane) or LL (leather-lined, no Gore-Tex), the Camino's performance is exceptional, especially on uneven ground.  With a nylon shank you get great protection for your feet and more of the stiffness you'd expect from a backpacking boot—although not as much as you do from one of Lowa's field boots.  The Camino also features a stabilizing technology called SPS (Supination Pronation Support), which guides your foot forward, disallowing errant walking patterns. Thanks to improved flex technology, when the Camino breaks in, it fits like a glove and vanquishes any longing for other boots! My boss bought a pair for his backpacking trips and loves them. Weight per pair: 3lbs 7oz

Lowa trekking boots Vantage GTX Mid Hiking Boots - Men's-Brown/Beige Lowa Vantage GTX Mid Hiking Boots

For an even lighter option, at 2lbs 14oz per pair, the Lowa Vantage GTX is a terrific trekking boot. Made of split-grain leather and cordura nylon, the Vantage is a durable boot with a quick break in time that's built to keep you going down that trail.  The Vantage is stiffer than  hiking boots like the Renegade  —  for extra support while you're carrying your loaded pack in the backcountry — but more flexible than the Camino.  It also comes with a Gore-Tex liner that makes the Vantage waterproof for life. There are many other considerable assets built in such as lacing details that maximize comfort and a dual-density sole that cushions and protects.

Planning a trip? Assess your gear to find your true boot needs, and let us know how we at can help. Thanks for reading, happy trails!

Lowa Field Boots, A Rundown on Baffin, Hunter, Tibet

    by Reed

Lowa Field Boots excel with backpack loads over 40lbs, but they're also a favorite of hunters, trail workers, wildland firefighters, and general rugged individuals. We carry them at (on sale now), because we realize not all destinations have trails leading to them. Sometimes the destination is a moving target. Tracking a moose or chasing a wildfire can take you through all kinds of conditions and terrain, and so will Lowa field boots.

Every one of Lowa's field boots has a 5mm full-length nylon shank that provides superior stability and protection from things like stone bruise. Let's find out what else Lowa field boots have to offer.

Lowa field boot Hunter GTX EVO Extreme Lowa Hunter GTX Evo Extreme

For cold conditions and varying landscapes, Lowa makes the Hunter GTX Evo Extreme. With a high enough cuff for superb ankle support and a high-wall rubber rand to protect the boots from abrasions, the Lowa Hunter GTX Evo Extreme will get you where you're going no matter the season. 200g of Primaloft keep you warm and a Gore-Tex liner keeps you dry. If your route is unpredictable but demands the best, stand assured in the Lowa Hunter GTX Evo Extreme.

Lowa field boots tibet hi gtx Lowa Tibet GTX Hi

If the above description applies to your needs but insulation isn't required, here's the Lowa Tibet GTX Hi. Recognized by groups like Field & Stream and Gray's Sporting Journal as the "Best of the Best" and "Best of 2016," the Lowa Tibet GTX Hi has all the same burly support and protection as the Hunter, including the Gore-Tex waterproof liner. Sparing the 200g of Primaloft insulation means this is your go to boot for 3-season sporting. This Lowa Tibet GTX Hi is also the higher version of another award winning boot from Lowa, the Lowa Tibet GTX.

Lowa field boots Tibet GTX Lowa Tibet GTX

The Lowa Tibet GTX is the ideal boot for backpacking in rugged hiking conditions. We sell a lot of these boots from our brick and mortar store in Vermont to below-treeline hunters, trail maintenance workers, land surveyors, arborists, etc. Its Gore-Tex liner means it's indubitably waterproof, giving you the ability to walk across streams, mud, or wet fields with confidence. Trust that the Lowa Tibet GTX will give you an edge to tackle any trail.

Lowa field boots baffin pro Lowa Baffin Pro

The Lowa Baffin Pro is just as qualified as as the Lowa Tibet GTX but even more so for hot, dry, arid environments. The Lowa Baffin Pro foregoes a Gore-Tex liner for increased breathability and has a glove-like leather lining that wicks moisture right off your feet. This is one of the most popular boots for wildland firefighters because the Baffin's ability to navigate technical terrain in hot weather and expel heat from the boots. With Lowa's cream and spray, it's waterproofness can be maintained.

There's a quick rundown on Lowa field boots. They're rugged, dependable and durable. If boots have failed you in the past and you want a pair you can count on, invest in some Lowas. You'll be thanking us. Not to mention we're having a sale through 3/16!

Lowa Renegade Sale! Lo, Mid, GTX, LL

    by Dylan

Lowa Renegade Sale weeks are always nice times at  We get to ship out boots knowing people will love them -- because we've had so many happy Renegade customers over the years!  The only question is: which Lowa Renegade is right for you??

The main differences between the different Renegade styles are Lo vs Mid and GTX (Gore-Tex) vs LL (Leather-Lined).

    Lo and Mid refer to the height of the boot;

Lowa Renegade sale GTX Mid Hiking Boots - Men's - Sepia Lowa Renegade Mid GTX

Mid goes above the ankle in the traditional hiking boot style,

Lowa Renegade sale II LL Lo Hiking Boots - Men's-Espresso Lowa Renegade LL Lo

Lo looks more like a shoe than a boot.

Both Lo and Mid come in GTX and LL versions.

The GTX (Gore-Tex) and LL (Leather-Lined) options pertain to the boots' interior lining.  GTX indicates the boot has a Gore-Tex liner that makes the boot waterproof and breathable; Gore-Tex guarantees it.   Choosing the LL option substitutes Gore-Tex for a supple leather lining that molds to the shape of your feet for a custom fit.   The leather on both versions comes treated with waterproofing.  To keep the outer layer of leather waterproofed--and maintained for optimal longevity-- use Lowa's creams and sprays.

There are also Lowa Renegade Pro and Lowa Renegade Deluxe options, which come with appreciable upgrades.

Lowa Renegade Sale Pro GTX Mid Hiking Boots - Men's-Brown / Red Lowa Renegade Mid GTX Pro

The Lowa Renegade Pro has a Gore-Tex membrane and a leather-lined cuff (around the top of the boot).

Lowa Renegade sale DLX GTX Mid Hiking Boots - Men's - Anthracite Lowa Renegade Mid DLX GTX

The Lowa Renegade Deluxe also has a Gore-Tex membrane and a leather lined cuff, as well as a waxed finish and a debossed Lowa logo to make the Lowa Renegade Deluxe a little more dress-casual.

With that said, we're happy at CC.  We're happy because we're making others happy!  That's what it's all about.  Right???  Score yourself a pair of Renegades and go tackle that trail you've been thinking about!  We're wishing you all safe adventures out there, and please be sure to tell your friends about and the:

Backpacking Tents Buying Guide, 1 Person

    by Dylan

Shelter is crucial when it comes to backpacking. Your tent is where you sleep, rest, and get ready for what lies ahead. With so many options to choose from, selecting which ultralight, one person tent is right for your adventures can be tricky.  It shouldn't be.  Here's a simple backpacking tents buying guide.

Factors to Consider when Buying a Backpacking Tent

    • Interior dimensions
    • Weight
    • Functionality
    • Ease of use

We've gathered some of our favorite tents together in this backpacking tents buying guide, so we can introduce you to your future home away from home.

    Marmot Force 1P

backpacking tents buying guidemarmot force 1p backpacking tent

Marmot's Force 1P tent weighs in at 2lbs 14oz -- relatively hefty in this category -- but the interior dimensions are palatial.  40"x36"x85" means less neck craning and more sprawling out, relaxed. Set up time for the Force 1P is about average -- not too long but not instant either.

Big Agnes Copper Spur UL 1
backpacking tents buying guide big agnesbig agnes copper spur ul 1 backpacking tent

Big Agnes's Copper Spur UL1 shares the features of Big Agnes' critically acclaimed Copper Spur series which has been named Gear of the Year in publications from Backpacker to Outside.  With many similarities to the Marmot Force 1P, the Copper Spur UL1 is able to save weight with its irregular shape --declaring dimensions of 42"x37"x90" and a weight of 2lbs 8oz.  While the Copper Spur is significantly roomier than Big Agnes' Fly Creek UL1, it's angled walls limit the Copper Spur UL 1's "livable space" compared to the other tents described here.

    NEMO Blaze 1P

backpacking tents buying guidenemo blaze 1p backpacking tent

NemoTents is having a breakout decade in the outdoor industry and shows no sign of slowing down. The Nemo Blaze 1P is another technological innovation courtesy of NEMO. At 2lbs even, measuring at 30"x40"x84", the Blaze 1P uses near vertical walls to maximize the interior and a unique pole design to make this tent very user friendly. Being the newest product on this list though, it's also the least proven.

    Big Agnes Fly Creek UL1

backpacking tents buying guide big agnesbig agnes flu creek ul1 backpacking tent

If you tend to gravitate to the "ultralight," Big Agnes has established their Fly Creek UL 1 as your incumbent candidate. It's 2lbs 1oz and has been used and loved by adventurers worldwide.  Notice it's the first tent so far with front access vs a side door. This feature keeps the weight down but detracts slightly in function -- having to contort a bit upon entry and exit, especially if your gear's in the vestibule.

    NEMO Gogo LE

backpacking tents buying guide nemogogo le nemo backpacking tent

If you're into extreme trips, the NEMO Gogo LE might be perfect for you. This tent takes the cake for ease of use; rather than using poles like the tents previous, the Gogo LE uses an inflatable air beam to support the shape of the tent. It's rainfly is also built in, with options to vent.  2lbs 2 oz is competitive with other ultralight options, but dimensions of 24"x27"x114" make this tent a little different. Consider it a luxurious bivy.

There you have it, a quick backpacking tents buying guide and five worthy candidates for your next adventure.  Did you come to a decision?  Sign up to be a member with (free of charge) and qualify to receive a 20% off coupon thru 3/10/16.  Plus you'll get updated when we're having sales on these great ultralight backpacking tents.

Remember the famous quote that my cross country running coach used to say, "There's no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing." That man, John Kerrigan, has 40 state championships. Coaching sports like cross country running, nordic skiing, and track and field, good clothing keeps his athletes in competitive condition.
